PROJECT SUMMARY.

The ChatGPT side menu redesign enhances chat organization by introducing two key features:

Pinned Chats & Folders.

Pinned Chats allow users to keep important conversations at the top for quick access, reducing the hassle of scrolling through long chat histories. Folders provide a customizable way to categorize chats, enabling users to drag and drop conversations into neatly organized groups with custom names and colors.

CHATGPT.

ChatGPT is an AI chatbot made by a company called OpenAI. You can talk to it by typing, and it responds in a way that feels natural—like you're chatting with a person. It can help you with homework, explain things, give creative ideas, write emails, fix grammar, and even help with coding or math. It's trained by reading a lot of text from books, websites, and other sources, so it "learned" how to understand language and give helpful answers.

TARGET AUDIENCE.

ChatGPT is made for anyone who wants help with thinking, writing, or learning. It's useful for students who need support with homework, studying, or writing assignments, and for professionals who want to draft emails, brainstorm ideas, or organize their thoughts.

THE Big PROBLEM

CHATS GET LOST.

0 ORGANIZATION.
The current ChatGPT chat history side menu is long and unintuitive, making it difficult for users to find important past conversations quickly.

As a dedicated user and proud owner of their exceptional cameras, I see a unique opportunity to redesign the app with a focus on improving usability, streamlining the user experience, and better complementing the brand's high standards.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

Simplicity drives usability: Even small features like pinned chats can significantly improve navigation when designed with clear intent.

Organization needs flexibility: Users think differently, so giving them control through folders (naming, colors, structure) creates a more personalized experience.

Familiar interactions reduce friction: Using patterns like drag-and-drop made the feature intuitive without requiring users to learn new behaviors.

Hierarchy is critical in information-heavy interfaces: Prioritizing important chats (pinning) and grouping others (folders) helps reduce cognitive overload.

Designing for scale matters: The solution needed to work not just for a few chats, but for users with long, messy histories.

NEXT STEPS

Conduct usability testing: Validate how users interact with pinned chats and folders, and identify pain points or confusion.

Refine interaction details: Improve microinteractions (drag feedback, folder states, animations) to make the experience smoother.

Explore smart organization features: Introduce AI-powered folders that automatically group chats based on topics or behavior.

Add sorting and filtering options: Allow users to sort by recency, frequency, or importance to further improve retrieval.

Evaluate edge cases and scalability: Test how the system performs with a large number of chats and deeply nested organization.
